ATOP Chapter Twenty

Letter from Emma Campbell-Hayes to Katherine Scott, August 1946

Dearest of Katies,

Just said goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Seth Morrison at the Jefferson train station... oh, that sounds silly. I mean Marci and Seth. It was so good to see her again! I do declare, Canada has been good for that girl, although I would never have believed becoming a citizen of any country besides our grand ole' US of A would be anything but detrimental. She has a glow on her face and a sparkle in her eyes that does one good to see.

Ah, but she has wonderful news, perhaps that accounts for the sparkle! It's in Seth's eyes too. Can you guess what it is? And I'm sure you've guessed right, I won't make you wait for the next letter to confirm your guess. They shall be adding a new little Canuck to their country come next spring. I am so happy for her I'm near to bursting, and of course I shall go to visit as soon as the little one comes! We are just surrounded by babies, aren't we, little sis? Expecting every day to hear wonderful news from you. In which case, don't take the time to write. By all means, you just pick up the telephone and suffer through a long-distance call. Do you hear me? I'm shouting it all the way from Ohio. And then I shall come when the baby does, of course. I shall be awfully busy, all this running back and forth when the babies come...

But I'm counting my chickens before they hatch, aren't I? Ha, it seems like all I can think about these days are babies. I should focus on being more patient and on getting more of these vegetables processed. They just keep coming and coming, oh Katie, why must we always have such big gardens? That giant victory garden we planted the first year of the war... it's still going just as strong as ever and I'm furious with Josh for planting it all out. I... ahem... may or may not have chased him with a giant zucchini this morning when he brought in two more bushels of tomatoes. The zucchini is slightly cracked now, you may guess why. As a result, we are having approximately our five hundredth zucchini casserole for supper tonight. With tomatoes. Sigh. Oh, and Josh wisely decided to donate the third bushel of tomatoes to Rachel. Who didn't happen to have a zucchini on hand, having pickled them all already. She is far ahead of me, canning-wise.
