Once Upon A Dream House

Dear Kindredly People Who Keep Reading The Blog Even When I Disappear For Ages At A Time....

A happy day to you! The sun is shining away in all its summer pleasantness, the gardens are thriving, AND to top it all off, we have in our possession a special treat for today! And special treats, in the scribbler's world, often include, well, scribbling😜

Having been tagged, after a fashion, by one Cecilia of Craft, Coffee, And Cake, who has retrieved this tag from the depths of the archives of Miss March's blog, and thereby revived it so handily for us, (Thankyou, Cecilia! By which I mean both the tagging and the reviving.... This tag has just been giving me the warm cozies whenever I think of it🤗) I have been considering thoughtfully for (QUITE) some time the ins and outs out my dream house. (Hence the title😜) During which  certain parts have become Practically Alive to me, which is great fun, and really lovely to explore.... But now we come to the beginning of July and it's STILL not up yet, (having been delayed considerably by Decided Cases Of Busies,) and is now one in a line of three tags I've got in my drafts, all in some stage of partially-written-ness! And with this one being the closest to complete, not to mention the first in line, it is coming out of the drafts in the same order, (that being first,)  and going out to greet the world at loooooooong last :) Now, what say we cease and desist with the ado-ing, and start in on the delightful pastime of dreaming?? (Directly after we have the rules of the thing, of course. See them, down below?)

The Rules:

1. Thank the person who tagged you.  (Check!)

2. List five things that start with "when I grow up and have my own house..." (they can be true, or utterly ridiculous, whatever you feel like writing :-)) (Annnnd check....)

3. Tag one other person and let them know that you have done so. (XD Why is this always the hitch with me??)

Ahem. Let us begin.

When I grow up and have my own house, I shall keep a bookshelf full of notebooks, (one per subject,) and in them I shall write with great faithfulness everything I could possibly ever want or need to know concerning the house, the garden, or my housekeeping schedule. Most useful for when one forgets things, such as how many rows of what you planted in your garden last year, and should therefore plant this year....(with an illustrated map of the thing, of course,) And just how many jars of canned peaches you put up in the cellar last fall, and if it was enough, and what all you need to stock up on when you go to the city. All that sort of thing. (I've begun implementing a form of this list making in my life and notes, and it is proving to be Incredibly Useful.) This, of course, will fall in line perfectly with my (by then) beautifully laid strategies of housekeeping, and both together will mean that the house is never to know grand states of chaos, (nor shall I ever be out of key ingredients when the time comes to make muffins, because baking soda shall have gone on the list directly it got a little low!) and all the little rhythms of cleaning and organizing will keep it in easily maintained order. I mean, why not shoot for the stars when you're dreaming anyway??

When I grow up and have my own house, it shall, naturally  come equipped with all the finest modern conveniences. (By this, of course, I mean such things as laundry chutes, storm shutters, dumb waiters, one of those ingenious little telephone booths in the house, and particularly those exceedingly brilliant cupboards into which you set dishes on the kitchen side, and take them out again from the dining room. Oh, and one of those clever little rolling ladders for reaching the top shelf that candy shops and libraries used to come with. (It goes without saying that a library shall exist for it to go in, all 'round floor-to-ceiling bookcases and big leather armchairs for those rainy days when the mending is all caught up.) In short, the finest and most up to date contrivances of one to two hundred years ago!

When I grow up and have my own house....

Ohh, but won't you come for a walk about the grounds with me for a minute? They're so charming that one does like to talk them over every once in a pale blue moon.... Climbing roses, and a big cabbage-and-beets kitchen garden, and a little Anne and The March Sisters one full of old fashioned flowers.... All pink and white with arches and stone paths and weeping willows! (And all kinds of other trees too, of course. I MUST have trees. Woods all about the place, preferably.) But oh, the piece de resistance of it surely must be the orchard. *leans in confidentially* I have dreamt of this for at least the past decade, and therefore it is rendered somewhat indispensable. (Also I would greatly approve of it having fireflies. For the children, you know.) Imagine the perfect riot of blossoms in the springtime! What bliss, and oh, what Snow Queens.... And that is also precisely where the fruit in all those jars down cellar and written up in my Pantry Book comes from, of course. Except the peaches. Peaches do not cooperate with our climate. (And of course, in the process of getting them ready for the cellar shelves, there shall never, ever be such episodes as there were with poor Meg and her jelly pots! Our jars shall be much friendlier to us.) It may even contain Birthday Trees, if we are sufficiently ambitious when such times arise as it is appropriate to plant them in, and wishes turn out to be closely enough related to horses!)

When I grow up and have my own house, (and this one is more hope than whim,) I want it to be the kind of place that people know instinctively upon stepping in the door that they can let their guard down, drop whatever load they're carrying, and just Be in. A sort of safe harbour and cozy haven of a place, all still waters and firelight.  It looks lovely in my imagination, but it isn't cooperating to my satisfaction when I try to put it into words, so you shall simply have to imagine it along with me XD

When I grow up and have my own house....

*Here she stalls, thinking of all the things Cecilia and Lizzie put into words so perfectly in theirs* Saying Ditto isn't really a proper answer, is it?? But ditto anyway, because What They  Said, people!! Especially in regards to the sewing of matching dresses for real little dollies, and being in a perpetually angelic frame of mind when the Other Half Of The Place comes home ;) (provided such a creature comes with this Dream House, of course😜) But to craft my own answer, and not just play copycat ALL the way, how is this for an answer?

When I grow up and have my own house...

Last but not least, I should like very much for it to come equipped with a sewing room. Well stocked, of course, with a big window looking out over the gardens to let in sunlight, and everything from buttons and thread racks to the mending basket.... And mainly because one gets so much more done when you don't have to clear away your project every time you need the table for other things, like making lunch. You can leave your pins and measuring tape and scissors scattered all over the table, and your project still waiting on the machine, shut the door, and come back to it all looking exactly as it did when you left, instead of having to get everything out all over again! Extremely useful, I think.

(Yes, I know it looks like six things this way, but the last two only count a half each toward the total number :P)

Annnnnd here I am, at the end of the tag, AND at the beginning of July already!! How DO the days fly by like this??

Anyways :P Thanks again, Cecilia, and sorry it's taken such impossibly long periods of time to actually happen! (I shudder to think how long it's actually been. Fairly sure it's an utterly inexcusable length of time😬)

Oh! Oh yes, tagging someone, that was the next-and-last order of business, wasn't it? Hmmm. This would be easier if I knew more people XD *scrolls through her mental address  book of blogs and their keepers* You know, I think I'll tag Julie over at Genius Burns for this one! (Yes, I know that's slightly like knocking on your own door, but I know she'll have intriguing answers, and I find myself wanting to hear them😄 *Gives the door a smart rap*)

And with that, a new day is beginning here, and I must up from my scribbling place and greet it :)

A Happy Day to you, dear reader! (And yes, I know I said that twice in one post, but Other Words refused to present themselves, so XD)

  1. Eeeeep, Emi, this was so sweet! You painted a beautiful word-portrait, and now I want to take a stroll around the place. Especially the orchard! The orchard!! 😍

(Poor Meg and her jelly jars. I have never made jelly and feel that if I ever do it would go something like that 😅)

Thank you for brightening my day, Emi! ❤️

    1. Ruth!! Ooh, I'm SO happy you enjoyed it, (isn't it lovely?? Suppose we picnic under the cherry trees while we're out here anyway? It seems like the day for raspberry cordial....) and that is the loveliest compliment, thankyou!!

(Ohh I know, the poor thing.... I stick firmly to refrigerator jam myself, so much safer..)

Welcome and thankyou right back, because that's precisely what you just did to mine😂🤗

  2. This was such a fun post to read, Emi!

I love the idea of the rolling bookshelf ladders (whatever happened to those??) and a weeping willow. Those are most definitely a must!! :)

    1. Aww, thankyou!! I'm so glad you liked it😜 (To be honest, I wasn't sure about how it turned out, so this is especially nice to hear :P)

I know, right?? Why did those ever stop being a thing, they need to make a comeback!!

*sighs happily* Something about weeping willows just makes a person happy in an Anne-ish sort of way....

  3. Oh, this was so fun to read! I love the pictures too...

There must be something about baking soda... it always runs out for me whenever I need it! I always felt sorry for Meg, as the jelly not setting is so relatable! (Not that I make jelly, but I feel like it wouldn't set if I tried xD)

Oh, orchards! Lovely! I really want to visit! (And, just wondering, will there by any chance be beehives in the orchard? I just associate bees with orchards...)

Your dream house sounds so lovely, Emi!!

    1. Isn't that the worst?? Especially when you have everything else, and already started measuring things out, and then have to reroute it into a recipe that can do without Baking Soda.... (I feel like this would be an extremely disheartening thing, having the jelly not set after ALL the work you already put in....)

Oh, you must come visit directly it becomes a reality ;)
The BEEHIVES, I forgot to say beehives!!! Because of course there will be, (how else can we possibly do our baking?? I MUST have honey to bake!) and THANKYOU for thinking of them🤗🤗They just fit perfectly somehow, don't they?? And ohhh, imagine, Apple Blossom honey.... *goes offf on a flight of ecstasy* *returns to solid ground after a moment or two, because she wasn't done with her note yet*

Oh, you girls are too sweet, it just keeps making my day every time one of you comes by🤗🤗

  4. Well, you most certainly did not play copycat, since there are so many things you mention that I hadn't thought of but now want in MY dream house! (Like the dumb waiter! And the laundry chute! And all your absolutely marvelous modern conveniences!)

(I have a similar setup to your notebook system - except it's all in one book, with the different bits sectioned off. I don't use it as often as I should, though, so its actual usefulness is therefore limited.)

Ooh, your orchard sounds such a dream <3 (And no indeed, escapades such as happened to poor Meg could NEVER happen in your dream house!)

In any case, perhaps I could come visit sometime? :D

    1. Oh, well then, I guess we're even😄

Ooh, matching!! Okay, that's just neat😂 (I actually keep mine in the Notes app on my phone, under the title of Practical Purposes, which makes the updating and removing of old things so much easier to keep up.)

Mmmmm, doesn't it?? Imagine such a dream actually coming true😯 (XD Oh goodness, I certainly hope they can't!! Somehow I don't think they'd be very comfortable things to have happen🤔)

Oh, not only can you, but I insist on it ;) Make it a lovely long one, mm?
